About This Quiz

This is the most comprehensive free ASME Section IX practice quiz available online — 150 questions drawn from all major topics in the 2025 edition of Welding, Brazing, and Fusing Qualifications. Every question is structured around the 2025 code, including the key changes introduced in this cycle: the SF-568M deletion, the complete restructure of brazing P-Number groupings, new Appendix M for Duplex Stainless Steels, and revised Appendix L for dual ASME/ISO qualification.

Whether you are preparing for a job interview, refreshing your knowledge for an upcoming audit, or working toward a CWI, CSWIP, or ASME certification, these 15 topic-focused sets will test and develop your understanding of WPS, PQR, WPQ, essential variables, welding positions, diameter qualification, mechanical testing, and much more.

How to use this page: Select any set below. Each set contains 10 questions with a 20-second countdown timer per question. After each answer, the correct response and a full explanation are shown immediately. Your score accumulates across all sets in this session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What edition of ASME Section IX does this quiz cover?
All 150 questions are written against the 2025 edition (BPVC.IX-2025, published July 1, 2025, mandatory from January 1, 2026). Questions on 2025-specific changes (Sets 10 and 14) test the major updates: SF-568M deletion, brazing P-Number restructure, new Appendix M for duplex stainless steel, revised Appendix L for dual ASME/ISO qualification, Table QW-453 revision, and more.
Who is this quiz designed for?
The quiz is designed for welding engineers, CWI/CSWIP candidates, QC inspectors, fabrication managers, and any professional who works under ASME pressure equipment codes. It is also useful for ASME API 510 or API 570 candidates who need to understand how Section IX governs the welding qualification records they review in service.
What is the difference between a WPS and a PQR?
The WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) is the written instruction the welder follows — the “recipe.” The PQR (Procedure Qualification Record) is the documented evidence that the WPS can produce acceptable welds, recording the actual variables used and the mechanical test results obtained during a controlled qualification weld. The PQR is a permanent factual record and is never edited; the WPS may be revised when nonessential variables change.
How long does a welder’s qualification remain valid?
Per QW-322.1, a welder’s qualification in a given process remains in force as long as they continue to use that process. If they have not welded with the process for any period exceeding six months, their qualification in that process expires and a new qualification test is required. Continuity is maintained by weld logs or production records showing the process was used within the preceding six months.
What does qualifying in the 6G position qualify a welder for?
A welder who passes the 6G pipe groove test on a coupon exceeding 2-7/8 in. (73 mm) OD is qualified for all groove positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) on both plate and any pipe diameter, and for all fillet and tack weld positions. The 6G is therefore the most commonly sought single qualification in oil & gas, power plant, and pressure vessel fabrication.
What was deleted from the 2025 ASME BPVC that directly affects welding procedures?
SF-568M (Specification for Carbon and Alloy Steel Externally Threaded Metric Fasteners) was permanently deleted — not revised — from the 2025 BPVC. Any WPS, PQR, design specification, purchase order, or material certification that references SF-568M is now non-compliant. Organizations must audit their quality system documents and replace all SF-568M references with the appropriate current specification before January 1, 2026.
